Monday 17th October: Music Video Shooting Deadline
Friday 21st October (last lesson of week): Music Video Rough Cut Deadline:
Friday 11th November (last lesson of week): Music Video Final Deadline

Friday 25th November (last lesson of week): Ancillary Products Deadline
Friday 16th December (last lesson of week): Evaluative Commentary:

Cameras

Before the rough cut deadline, you will be able to take a camera for 2 overnights or 1 weekend. The first opportunity you will have for filming is Friday 30th September from 4.10pm.
Between the rough cut and the final deadline, you will be able to have a camera in the lessons and for 1 overnight. No weekends.
You can have a stills camera in the lessons and for 1 overnight, from the point where filming commences. It is possible to have your video and stills cameras at the same time. This actually might be advisable.

Introduction to G324: Advanced Portfolio in Media

For this coursework, you will be producing the following:

A promotional package for the release of an album. This must include:
1. A music promo video.
2. A cover for the album's release on Digipak.
3. A magazine advertisement for the Digipak.

The practical component of this project is worth 60 marks.

20 marks will be for planning and research, which will be done on blogs.

20 marks will be for the written evaluation. This will be completed as a Director's. The evaluation questions are:

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
How effective is the combination of your main product and ancilliary texts?
What have you learnt from your audience feedback?
How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

PROBLEMS WITH PHOTO UPLOADS TO BLOGGER.

You may experience some problems with photo uploading in blogger.

When uploading a picture, blogger may tell you that you have gone over your limit. This may occur if you have uploaded too many high res pictures in a short period of time.

(If this happens - you may want to think about being more selective with the pictures you upload, to avoid this problem happening again).

If this problem occurs, please follow the step-by-step guide below:

Go to flickr.com and log in.
Username: longroadchildrensfilm10
Password: mediastudies
Upload any pictures you require (label them so that you can find them).
Find the picture that you want to upload to your blog.
Click on 'Share This' and Grab the HTML code. Copy and paste this code into your blog. Repeat this process for all the pictures you require.
Before you post your blog, at the bottom of the page click on 'Post Options' and select 'Interpret typed HTML'. This will convert all the code in your blog into the pictures you had flickr.

Blog Tasks - Planning and Research

You should ensure that your blog has varied and thorough posts that include images or videos that reflect your research and ideas.

Here are some topics that you should ensure are included on your Blog:

Star Analysis - You should each have analysed a star and how their videos sell them to the target audience, you can look at several videos or videos that span their career.

Auteur Theory - the theory and research on one music video director.

Goodwin’s Theory of Analysis - Ensure all 6 points are clear on your blog. Relate this to videos you study and your own ideas.

DVD Cover and Magazine Advert Analysis - Real examples, your photoshop practice and ideas for you final products.

Timeline, Storyboards, Shotlists and Call Sheets - upload images to the blog with a description of what they are and how they will help you.

Mise-en-scene - Research on your genre and plans for your own ideas

Analysis of past students work - analyse using the marking criteria and/or Goodwin’s points.

Location Reports - street map images or still photo images, information about the location and why it is suitable (Group 48 on the 2009/2010 Archive has good examples).

Target Audience Research - You could do a mind map or a questionnaire. (discuss all three products not just your video)

Lyrics Analysis - ensure the lyrics for your song are on the blog, analyse mood and representation of the artist etc.

Editing Techniques - Find examples of similar editing styles or transitions that you plan to use.

Mood Board - create a mood board for you overall inspiration.

Amateur vs Professional - Analyse the differences between a student and real artist music video.

Contact the original artist - Show that you have attempted to seek permission from the artist to use their song (e.g. via Facebook)

Test Footage - experiment with shot types and editing techniques and upload these to the blog.

Look a the blog of the week - What inspiration can you take from them? Why do you think their blog is successful?

This is a minimum. You should use your imagination to create other posts.

Music videos demonstrate genre characteristics (e.g. stage performance in metal video, dance routine for boy/girl band).
There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
There is a relationship between music and visuals (either illustrative, amplifying, contradicting).
The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist and the artist may develop motifs which recur across their work (a visual style).
There is frequently reference to notion of looking (screens within screens, telescopes, etc) and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body.
There is often intertextual reference (to films, tv programmes, other music videos etc).
